Lissa's Lists • Spring + Summer Home Refresh

HOME + LIFESTYLE, WISHLISTS, Lissa's Listslissa-anglin2 Comments

Since we’re all spending a lot more time at home lately, I have found myself in spring cleaning mode. We’ve purged, rearranged, consolidated…and now I’m excited for a little refresh because the weather had been beautiful lately!

So, for today’s Lissa’s List, I’m sharing a few things I’ve picked up for my home, and a few things I’ve loved having over the years.

Funny Doormat
I saw this a few weeks ago and thought THAT WAS MADE FOR OUR HOUSE. This Etsy shop offers lots of hilarious and cute sayings on custom made doormats.

Under Doormat Rug
I just love this buffalo check and it’s the perfect for under a natural fiber doormat. Comes in red and black for all you Red Raiders, too!

Olive Leaf Door Wreath
I am so impressed with this little faux olive wreath - I’m picky about faux flowers, and this leafy wreath is just perfect for my front door.

Faux Plants

Wall Hanging Faux Plants
I hope to be a real plant lady one day, but these faux hanging plants are just perfect. I think I’m going to grab a few for the kids’ bathroom.

Faux Fiddle Leaf Fig Tree
I have a couple real fiddle leaf fig trees, and let me tell you- they are finicky. Thankfully, you can’t kill this one and it looks quite nice in any corner of your home.

Faux Snake Plant
I’m also snagging some of these for my front porch on either side of my front door. They add the perfect amout of height.

Santal Oil
Ya’ll, if you grab ONE thing off this list, make it this oil! It is absolutely my favorite smell and we keep it in our living room diffuser pretty much all the time.

Outdoor Rug
I get asked about this rug all the time. It is actually an outdoor rug, but I have it under our dining room table because KIDS ARE MESSY. I love that I can literally wipe or spray this off. We’ve had it a few years and it still looks brand new.

Outdoor Pillows
Neutral
Love these neutral pillow covers with the leather accent. I would definitely use these inside, too!
Colorful
These are very similar to what I currently have on our patio, and I love the bright colors and illustrations.

Utensil Caddy
My mom has always kept a caddy like this stocked with paper goods in her pantry, and finally last year I bought one and wondered why I hadn’t done it sooner! This caddy is perfect for stocking with paper plates, napkins, and utensils and makes grilling out and eating on the patio super easy.

Wooden Utensils
I love these and think they are a stylish and Earth-friendly alternative to the plastic utensils. Plus, they aren’t that expensive! I’ve got some in my cart.

Diamond Planter
I’ve been eyeballing this planter on Amazon for a while now! So cute!

Planter with Stand
I have this planter and get asked about it a lot. Neutral and stylish.

Fiddle Leaf Woven Basket
Excited to have gotten one of these as a new home for one of my fiddle leaf figs. I almost bought another one for throw pillows and blankets in the living area.

Paper Goods

While looking for a caddy similar to mine, I came across all these fun paper goods and had to share! What a fun way to make a backyard dinner a little more special!
Amethyst & Rose Gold Paper Plates

Pale Pink & Gold Confetti Paper Cups

White Marble & Gold Cocktail Paper Napkins

Lissa's Lists • Creative Mama Mother's Day Gifts

LIFESTYLE, Lissa's Lists, WISHLISTS, CRAFTSlissa-anglinComment

It’s sure to be a Mother’s Day like no other this year- and I am predicting that more than ever, most moms just want a few minutes alone! However, while we’re all safe at home, I have a feeling that those of us with crafting in our veins are itching for something to make. So, this week’s list is coming a day early- so you can go ahead and send this to whomever might be purchasing your gifts this year!

This week’s list includes a few of my all-time faves, a few things that I’m crushing on, and some of the things you guys, my community, have told me you’re wanting. There are a few great sales happening and so I’ve linked all the items right here for you- best price guaranteed!

Illustrating Bible

I get asked about my Illustrating Bible all the time, and I absolutely love it. It is a nice large size, the square shape is perfect for posting photos, the pages don’t bleed through and the spiral binding is a gamechanger. If you are wanting a journaling Bible, this is the ONE! Promise. (Psssst- also found it for 25% off at the link above).

Illustrated Faith Accessories

If you’re getting a journaling Bible, might as well go ahead and grab a few accessories. My favorites are the date stamp, cardstock and epoxy stickers- but they have a ton more!

Cricut Joy

This is a recent addition to my craft room, and I go to bed at night thinking about more projects I can do with it. :) Not joking. It is so compact and perfect to just keep out on a desk or shelf- perfect for small projects like cards and labels. I’m considering it my new label makeer!

Cricut Air 2

This is the Joy’s older, slightly more capable sister. She can pretty much do anything you want, at a larger size, and if you’ve been eyeballing one, go ahead and pull the trigger- these are priced lower than I’ve ever seen them right now!

Cricut Easy Press

You know all those cute custom shirts you see people wearing? They probably have an easy press. This little heat machine is what adheres the vinyl on to fabric and you could literally make alll sorts of things- from onesies to dishtowels to tote bags.

Water Pens

These are a favorite of mine! Perfect for newbie brush letterers, or anyone who is a little nervous about watercoloring with a brush. The water stays inside the pen, and then you dip it into color. It combines colors beautifully as well.

Iridescent Ink

Y’all, how fun are these inks?! These can be used like any paint, with a water brush, or in an alcohol ink project. A little goes a long way, so they will last a long time. I linked the set that you would REALLY want.

Iridescent Watercolors

Iridescent means they SPARKLE! This is a newer product and I am dying to test them out. I think they will be so much fun for Bible journaling!

Supply Cart

This is such a no-brainer- I am positive that everyone could use one or a few of these. I love the fact that you could pack if full of supplies and then roll it to wherever your project is happening. My heart loves a good functional gift.

Tombow Pens

FAVORITE. PENS. EVER. They’re just good, ya’ll. The dual tips are perfect when you want to brush letter and then switch to the fine tip. They have a ton of colors and I’m linking a new color palette here!

Stabilo Pens

A friend gifted these to me a few years back and I have loved them for their size and great variety of colors. These are perfect if you need a super fine tip- I use them to underline in my Bible a lot. Ples this little carrying case is so cute!

Watercolor Tin

I have this watercolor tin and love it. It’s sturdy, gives me room to mix paints, and the little containers can pop in and out so you can wash them or rotate out your colors.

Paint Pouring Kit

Am I the only one who has spent many, many minutes on the internet watching paint pouring?! Now there is a KIT you can do at HOME, guys! How fun is that?!

Lissa's Lists • Fun Kitchen Must-Haves

LIFESTYLE, Lissa's Lists, WISHLISTSlissa-anglinComment

I’m a list lover. I’ll write to-dos down just to cross them off. Want to convince me of something? Make a list of reasons why. So, for some time now, I’ve wanted to do a fun weekly feature called Lissa’s Lists- where I get to share a fun list of whatever I feel like sharing! So, without further ado…

This week’s list is Fun Kitchen Must-Haves. I thought about calling it Quirky Kitchen Gadgets or Stuff I Have In My Kitchen That Makes Me Smile, but really, all of these things are things I would consider must haves- and they either make cooking a little easier or more fun for me- or both!

Popco Popcorn Maker

We bought this popcorn maker about 2 weeks into quarantine and have used it so much! There are tons of great recipes out there but we love this kettle corn one the best.

PackIt Freezer Bags

You could say I’m a little fanatical about this brand of bag- they contain ice packs build into the bag and fold up nice and compact to fit in your freezer when not in use. We use this for road trip snacks, soccer and baseball games and picnics. We also have several of their lunchboxes, and they make ones for breast milk as well!

Oxo Strawberry Huller

My mother-in-law gave me one of these after I watched in amazement as she used hers one day. I love strawberries and this little guy takes all the pain of getting the stem out!

Microwave Cleaner Angry Mom with Fridge Odor Absorber Cool Mom

Quite the quirky and useful pair- my mom gave me these. One is a fridge odor remover, and one fills with water and vinegar and steams your microwave clean.

Dinosaur InstaPot Steam Diverter

I mean, why not?! I bought this because I noticed that my InstaPot was steaming right onto my kitchen cabinets, but also it’s just fun. Be sure to check that it fits your specific model before you buy - they also have other characters if dinos aren’t your jam.

Brown Sugar Saver

This is a quick and cheap fix for dry brown sugar. Just soak it in water and pop it into your canister, and voila!

Square Ice Cube Trays

I love these for many reasons- good for whiskey ice, frozen coffee, homemade baby food.

Pampered Chef Mix N Chop

Another gift from my mom that I use several times a week. This little tool makes breaking up ground beef, turkey or sausage soooo much faster and easier.

Kitchen Scissors

If you don’t have a good pair of kitchen scissors, you’re working too hard!

lissa's lists: 13 ways to save money with your mindset

LIFESTYLElissa-anglinComment
Shawn and I both use the Every Dollar app to watch our monthly budget quickly and easily from our phones.

Shawn and I both use the Every Dollar app to watch our monthly budget quickly and easily from our phones.

When Shawn and I were first married almost 15 years ago, we honestly had no idea what we were doing financially. We had out own tendencies- Shawn’s was spend, spend, spend, and mine was hoard, hoard, hoard, which has completely flip-flopped at this point, in an ironic turn of events. It took us about 3 years to realize neither of us really knew how to pay bills and we finally read the Total Money Makeover and got on the same page. So many of these tactics are things we learned from Dave Ramsey and over years of using his system- this is not a paid endorsement, haha- it is honestly just things we have seen work for us!

Since then, we rarely argue about money. In fact, it’s one of the ways we enjoy collaborating most. We love setting goals and working toward them so that we can accomplish mutually shared dreams and visions.

Recently I was reminded of a few habits and tricks we’ve acquired over the years that haven’t cost a thing- and have actually saved us money over and over again.

So on today’s edition of Lissa’s Lists, here are my 13 ways to save money with your mindset:

1) Sleep on it. This is a great principle, and it works especially well with big purchases. This tactic helps avoid emotional purchases. I distinctly remember one occasion where I was VERY pregnant (yes, totally blaming this bad decision on the hormones) when I got a flat tire and Shawn sent me to the tire shop to get it fixed. Instead of walking out with a repaired tire, I spent about $1,000.00 on a whole new set of rims, mainly because I was exhausted and emotional. Ugh. I still regret that one. The bigger the cost, the more nights you may need to sleep on it.

2) Be in agreement with your spouse. This one sounds simple, but is actually pretty complicated. It requires listening (even if you don’t agree) to your spouse’s concerns and desires, and counting them as legitimate and worthy pieces of the decision. If we are trying to make a decision on a big purchase and aren’t in full agreement on it, as a rule- we do nothing until an agreement can be reached. Either spouse acting on their own at this point would be a major breach of trust and a clue as to deeper issues.

3) Don’t buy another until the first one runs out. This one has been SO good for me, as I stated before I tend to hoard things. This works well with beauty products and cosmetics– I am notorious for having 3-4 different types of shampoo in the shower at any given moment. It’s also great for other categories: Cars. Tires. Shoes. I ran this post by Shawn before publishing and he wants you to know that this is not recommended with milk. Or deodorant. Definitely stock up on deodorant.

4) See how long you can go without it. I personally love this type of challenge, because I am a justifier and can conjure up a good enough reason to make any purchase. So, to prevent myself from spending all our money, I will test myself and see how long we can go without. 90% of the time, we don’t actually need it or I can find something we already have that works just as well.

5) Have a no-spend day once a week. In the same vein, you can extend your challenge to a household no-spend day once a week. Tightwad Tuesdays, perhaps :). This is a great tactic if you are working to get rid of debt, and a great way to build trust and a team mentality in your marriage. Not a great tactic if you just choose to overspend the day after. :)

6) Use something you already have, or borrow it. How many times have you purchased something, only to realize you already had one? Guilty. Another thing I am guilty of is declaring a need for a new bag or decorative item, when I already have options at home. If a room needs a refresh, move things around or see what you might already have hidden in the hall closet.

7) Put it on a list for later. Or if you’re like me, and put it into your shopping cart and don’t actually check out, haha. Shawn makes fun of me, but the little “save for later” feature in my Amazon shopping cart has saved us THOUSANDS of dollars. I still get the satisfaction of “adding to cart”, but don’t actually check out. This really works well for me on Amazon and Target. And often, companies will send you a discount code for items you have not purchased that are already in your cart. So if you do need to purchase them eventually (after a good night’s sleep and consideration, of course), you have a discount code.

Additionally, if you are anticipating a big purchase, make a long-term list and order those items by priority. We do this every month at our household budget meeting and have watched these items either change in order of priority, disappear altogether, or come to fruition by way of saving up monthly.

8) Get grocery delivery or pickup to prevent impulse purchases in-store. This is a “mindset” tactic in that it saves you from those impulse purchases and keeps you sticking to a list and a set budget.

9) Don’t compare. This one is tough, and for me has been more about calling myself out when I slip into the den of comparison. A good reminder for me is that you’ll never know fully what someone else’s finances are like- they may be in debt up to their eyeballs and driving brand new vehicles, or sporting a junker car and be a millionaire. A great book for some perspective is The Millionaire Next Door.

10) Have absolutes on debt. Once we went through Financial Peace University, Dave Ramsey’s financial class, we said “no” to debt. We know that it is not an option for us, and if it causes us to personally go into debt, we are not interested. This has kept us in the black for the majority of our marriage, and has allowed us to actually accrue a decent net worth.

11) Budget spending money for yourself. This tactic helps you avoid a victim mentality when it comes to spending. If you have an allotted amount to spend on whatever you like, there will be no need to justify purchases because you feel like you were overlooked/never get to spend money on yourself (insert your excuse here). This also gives you permission to make an emotional purchase within a safe spending limit. Emotional purchases are totally ok- as long as they don’t kill your big plans and stay within the budget.

12) Take time to do the research and get educated. This has also been a huge tactic on big purchases for us. We have learned not to spend money on anything we don’t understand (this includes investments). And if we don’t understand yet, we need to do the research and/or get educated. Those have been such gifts and at times have changed our minds on what we actually spend our money on.

13) Do a budget (with your spouse if you are married) and stick to it. If it’s not clear yet, we are pretty hardcore about budgeting around here. At this point in our marriage, it is a 30 minute meeting once a month, and no big deal. It didn’t start out that way, though- and definitely took some practice to perfect. This is the ONE key item that will change your trajectory. If you want to learn how to do a budget, read the Total Money Makeover.

I realize how many times I have referenced Dave Ramsey in this post, and no- this is not a paid endorsement! It is just a relatively simple system that has worked well for us. If you need direction, I would start with The Total Money Makeover book or enroll in a local Financial Peace University class.

I hope this has been helpful! Which tactic speaks to you the most? Do you have any to add to this list? I’d love for you to share in the comments!

You guys know I love Amazon lists (you can view all of mine right here)- but this post is something extra special. I asked my husband of 13 years, and general man’s man, Shawn, to put together a Father’s Day wishlist. When he accepted and then came up with this awesome collection, I was so impressed!

Gifts for men can be so tough, and there is a good range of price tags here. I personally loved the Daddy-Daughter Date Idea book, but a lot of the items here are things he already owns and loves. So, check it all out below.

lissa's lists • 50 things to do with your kids this summer

MOMLIFE, LIFESTYLElissa-anglinComment
Sprinklers-2612.jpg

I don’t know about you, but as a working mom (who offices from home), when summer draws near- I start to panic. I photograph a lot of weddings during the summer and so for me, it’s my busy season. Add 3 potentially bored children to that, and my eye twitch is back in full force.

partofmeblog.com.png

So this Monday, I’m writing this list for me- so I literally have something to reference when I need an idea to keep little hands busy.

Most of these can be done at home, and I tend to favor ideas that I don’t have to monitor. I know sometimes we just need to get out of the house, so I’m including a few ideas for “field trips” as well. I’m also including a few things like pool and water toys that we like to buy at the beginning of the summer.

1) Freeze toys in ice and let them dig them out

2) Create a pinwheel garden. Buy some pinwheels at the dollar store or create your own, and let the kids “plant” them in pots or the ground. Maximum effect and no watering necessary!

3) Make your own pinwheels (helpful for number 2!)

4) Do some target practice with water balloons in the backyard. Draw a target with chalk on your fence and let the kids go at it! These quick-filling water balloons are the BEST and totally worth it!

5) Paint with water on the driveway. We like to add in chalk to make it extra colorful. Have I mentioned I buy sidewalk chalk in bulk?!? Ha!

6) Print out a free scavenger hunt from my Pinterest board. There are several that will work in the car, at home, or out and about. I also love this D.I.Y. one that is perfect for younger kids who don’t read yet.

7) Blow up some balloons. And just let the kids do as they please. Somehow this is always entertaining.

8) Throw in some paper plates and let the kids play balloon tennis. Don’t forget to have them decorate their plates beforehand! More busy time. :)

9) Love this balloon puppy idea from The Craft Train. My girls would love it and Knox could probably make some Pokemon/Minecraft version for himself.

10) Water balloon volleyball with towels.

11) Create a scene on your driveway with sidewalk chalk that your kids can pose in and take pictures.

12) Make a summer movie bucket list that include some of your old favorites. There are so many great ones available on streaming services we already have. I like to use Common Sense Media to get some ideas and a run-down on the content before they watch.

Best Kids' Movies on Netflix in 2019

13) Mix up a new popcorn recipe for movie time using these recipes from A Grande Life.

14) Create an outdoor mud kitchen. There are many elaborate ones on Pinterest but for us this usually looks like me handing the girls a few plastic kitchen utensils and bowls they don’t normally get to play with.

15) Up your game by including some pantry staples you’ll never use (rice, pasta, etc.) to use in their outdoor play kitchen.

16) Plant something and let them tend to it every day. Grass seeds grow quickly and potato vine is cheap and grows quickly. You can let each kid have a vine they take care of.

17) Make some watering cans from old milk cartons.

18) Have a scheduled fashion show. Assign number of outfits. Designate a stage tech who is in charge of lighting and music.

19) Give the kids a couple of old bedsheets and have them create a fort in the backyard.

20) Create an easy pulley system in the backyard and have the kids haul goods.

21) Create a care package to mail to someone. Make a card, create a scavenger hunt. Have the kids fill out this All About Me printable book and mail it to a friend with a blank one inside for them to fill out.

22) Make a music video using an ipad or a phone and send it to a friend. Assign each of the kids a job.

23) Mystery snow cones. Test the kids’ ability to try new things and have them guess the flavors of their snow cones (you’ll have to order, of course).

25) D.I.Y. Pantry popsicles. We have made popsicles many times with some cheap popsicle molds and ingredients we had on hand- powdered lemonade is a staple for us so we mix it with whatever fresh fruit we have- canned fruit works well, too! Add in sprinkles, crushed candy, yogurt- you name it, we have probably tried to make a popsicle out of it! Or you could just try these tried-and-true delicious popsicle recipes!

26) Play snow! This stuff makes a mess but brushes off the skin very easily. And one little bag makes a ton. Our kids love playing with it.

27) Play florist for a neighbor, grandparent, or friend. Buy a cheap bouquet while you’re at the grocery store, have the kids make a card. Use a leftover vase or mason jar and help the kids create a bouquet. Add ribbon. It doesn’t have to be pretty. One bouquet can make several small arrangements. Add in greenery from your backyard as filler. And deliver it!

28) Prep dinner. I have found my kids will eat so much better at mealtime if they “help” make dinner. We do a lot of crock pot/instant pot meals so I have begun appointing a helper at every meal who assists me.

29) READ. Knox is a great reader but never really wants to read, so if I give him a time requirement (usually 30 minutes) with a reward at the end (such as screentime), he’ll often read longer than he is required to.

28) For non-readers, let them “read” on youtube! Start here! Tons of great children’s books.

Our library hosted a free petting zoo last year and our kids still talk about it as one of their favorite things we did!

Our library hosted a free petting zoo last year and our kids still talk about it as one of their favorite things we did!

29) Hit up the local library, which has a lot more than books. Ours has an array of free or cheap activities for kids.

30) Wash the car! And the bikes! Good soapy fun is always enjoyed.

31) Leaf Rubbings are always enjoyed at our house. You can make people or flowers out of them.

32) We used to love making hot rocks with melted crayons. This does require using an oven but I still enjoy doing this as an adult and you’ll have some pretty rocks for your garden!

33) Make paper airplanes and have awards for most decorative, longest flying, etc.

34) Make these awesome sponge balls instead of water balloons. Reusable and cheap!

35) Paint with watercolors on a block of ice. Use cheap watercolors- they will last a long time!

36) Show them how to create a summer dance playlist on spotify or Apple Music. Make a “dance floor” in the living room. Our girls love dancing with these play scarves, too.

37) Let them take something apart. This could be an old sports ball, outdated electronic, old stuffed animal, etc.

38) Run in the sprinklers. Put a sprinkler under the swingset and BOOM! Instant water park.

39) Go geo-caching. Super fun and free! Bring a few small prizes to leave when you find something. Start here!

40) Observe the constellations on your phone by downloading the Sky View app. Our kids love this app and you can print out this free constellation map to use!

41) Give the dogs a bath. Or the baby dolls.

42) Use these free printable tangrams! These are great for a variety of ages. Our 8 year old son enjoys origami, too- find some youtube videos that teach.

Bubble machines are relatively cheap and great for littles who haven’t figured out the wands quite yet.

Bubble machines are relatively cheap and great for littles who haven’t figured out the wands quite yet.

43) I love this create your own paintbrushes idea! Grab some tempera paint that will wash out easily or use watercolor.

44) Practice the alphabet with sticky notes.

45) Get the GoNoodle app on your computer or smart TV. Tons of great songs and activities there.

46) Code.org is an awesome learning tool for school-aged kids and a lot of fun.

47) We also love Cosmic Kids Yoga, too!

48) Make (or just buy!) some different varieties of bird feed and hang a paper on the window to track which feed is most popular and what birds are eating it.

49) Make some bubble wands with pipe cleaners. We love bubbles and stock up on them always!

50) Watch some silly or interesting kid-friendly videos. We love episodes America’s Funniest Home Videos, BBC Walk on the Wild Side videos like this one, and we also love to research trips or upcoming vacations by finding informational videos on those places.

Most of these ideas have a corresponding pin on my Summer Activities for Kids Pinterest board!

I’m also planning on picking up a few items for the pool or outdoor play for the summer- here are a few of the things I’ve been eyeballing!

Hope you found this helpful! Here’s to a fun summer!
