Art, décor, family and photography- it's all part of me!

I have to admit, if I had to choose one type of photography to do for the rest of my life, it would be headshots. I always love a good tight crop of someone's face, and I shoot on the foundation that everyone should have a great picture of themselves. Plus, I love getting to know people.

I got to photograph Jeannie right before we left for Santa Fe last week and it was truly a pleasure. Jeannie is on faculty at Texas Tech and teaches music theory and aural skills. We went to my favorite location (a parking garage!) and took advantage of all the wonderful light.

As I was working on these today, I thought it was appropriate to tune in to KOHM.org and listen to Jeannie's husband feature some beautiful music! Thanks Clint!

I had quite a few favorites- which do you like best?

EDIT: When I first posted this blog, I thought Callye was already at the one year mark- but she's really only nine months! I even have her birthday in my calendar, so you would think I would know, but apparently  6+3=12 to me! Sorry Casye!

I can't believe a year has gone by since started photographing this wonderful little baby! In a way, it seems like it's been longer- just because I've known these guys for so long.

Callye taught me a lot about being a nine month old during this session. When you're one, you're interested in lots of moving things. Climbing is awesome. And Mommy and Daddy are still hilarious.

We had a great time at the park. Here are some of my faves:

Nine months = one tooth.

My very favorite.

jason + brittany- married!

Jason and Brittany were married at First Baptist Church here in Lubbock and had their reception at the American Wind Power Center. The whole day was filled with good friends and memories, but I will never forget the few moments right after the ceremony. They were both so relieved and happy- it reminded me of the whole point of a wedding- being together.

Brittany's mom requested a picture of her by the stained glass...

I always love the candids Shanna captures during the formal portraits. Here's one:

The Groom!

My fave! Right after the ceremony.

Listening to toasts at the reception- such a gorgeous couple.

This little one was pooped after all that dancing!

I just really love these two. They were married on an unusually gorgeous January day and their love for each other and for Christ set the tone for a joyful and relaxing wedding.

I've only known Josh for a little while, but I grew up with Anja in Borger- so it was extra nice to get to see people I know (and love) the whole day. Shanna shot with me, and she did an excellent job- here we are before the festivities began:

There were tons of great details throughout the day- I've narrowed it down the best I could for you guys!

Love this shot of Anja's dress that Shanna captured:

10 points to whoever can guess the background for this image!

Ring love!

Another Shanna capture...

This image feels really "fresh" to me...

The first sight...shot through the sanctuary door window...

Shanna's view:

My view (I guess I have a thing for staircases):

Love the drama in this one...

Married!

Recognize these two? They've been married for almost 3 months now!

Love this moment- so typical of Anja and her family- always smiling!

The weather here in Lubbock had been quite interesting lately. Sunday afternoon we were enjoying a game of pick up football in our jeans and tshirts...but for the past couple days no one has wanted to leave home for all the ice and snow around.

Yes, I like the cold weather- only because it forces us to slow down a bit and stay at home.

It's finally warming up today and I am already regretting my decision to let Lola outside. She really likes to get dirty. I don't know how many times I've had to clean that dog up...she is pretty cute, though!

an inspirational excerpt

Just wanted to share an excerpt from the book I'm reading...it's worth the 2 minutes it will take to read!

"Working artists David Bayles and Ted Orland tell a story about an art teacher who did an experiment with his grading system for two groups of students. It is a parable on the benefits of failure. Here is what happened:

The ceramics teacher announced on opening day that he was dividing the class into two groups. All those on the left side would be graded solely on the quantity of work they produced, all those on the right solely on its quality. His procedure was simple: on the final day of class he would bring in his bathroom scales and weigh the work of the "quantity" group: fifty pounds of pots rated an "A", forty pounds "B", and so on. Those being graded on quality, however, needed to produce only one pot- albeit a perfect one- to get an "A". Well, came grading time and a curious fact emerged: the work of highest quality were all produced by the group being graded for quantity. It seems that while the "quantity" group was being busily churning out piles of work-- and learning from their mistakes-- the "quality" group had sat theorizing about perfection, and in the end had little more to show for their efforts than grandiose theories and a pile of dead clay.

It doesn't matter whether your objectives are in the area of art, business, ministry, sports or relationships. The only way you can get ahead is to fail early, fail often, and fail forward.

I'd love to hear your thoughts on this. Learning that failure is not scary, and can, in fact, be a good thing has been really freeing for me. One of my favorite quotes is "Always make new mistakes" - Esther Dyson

How has failure impacted your life?

Because I'm regularly lugging around 10+ pounds of photography equipment, I don't often get around to shooting anything that's not work-related. Sad, I know!

This last weekend my husband's band played at the Ignite Student Conference here in Lubbock and I was sure to bring my camera to document it. (Maybe I'll even have some prints made! Woo-hoo!)

We had a great time hanging out and seeing people we haven't seen in a while. Here's Shawn tuning up before the show:

And the empty coliseum:

Zach's parents showed up, which was a nice suprise-

Here's Jason, the associate pastor at our church, being all business-like...

My mom was here, too!

Zach's photo-skillz...actually, I clicked the shutter button.

I don't know why I like this one so much...maybe I just like people in it!

Jason and his sweet daughter.

Heather mid-laugh- which is very appropriate- this girl is always laughing!

I made them smile. :)

Do you think they called each other? Just kidding...

Drew Worsham was the illusionist who performed in increments throughout the conference. He was great!

On with the show! I shot A LOT, but here are some of my faves:

The blue lights are cell phones (modern-day lighters)!

Madness at the merch table after the show...

I actually grew up going to the Ignite Student Conference (used to be called Hot Hearts). It's been incredible to get a different look at all of the work, time and prayer that goes into putting an event like this together. I know I am so blessed to be a part of this ministry-- the more I trust God, the more He knocks my socks off!

What a seriously fun wedding. Ashley and Chris were married two weekends ago in my college hometown of Plainview. It was a beautiful day for January and these two were so much fun to follow- they were married at the Fair Theatre and the reception was held on the WBU campus.

Out of the hundreds (literally- hundreds) of images I liked, these are some of my favorites. This couple chose to see each other before the ceremony, which leant us plenty of time to go on a photo escapade.

Each bridesmaid's bouquet was wrapped with a different style of black and white ribbon. They also wrapped tealights in the different ribbons at the reception. I loved the idea!

In the ticketbooth inside the lobby of the theatre: "Hello? Yes, I'd like some tickets to my wedding...yes, it's today..."

Behind this lovely bunch is the Quick Lunch Diner (now a coffee shop), which was seen in Steve Martin's movie "Leap of Faith".

Beautiful, dramatic light inside the ceremony.

Loved the "red" candy bar.

Just thought I'd throw this out there for any Wayland people: Can you spot Dr. Manning?

To Chris and Ashley- thank you guys for being so up for anything- especially when I asked you to squeeze into a tiny, dirty alley staircase! You two are really wonderful together and your love for God is obvious!
